Proteus Alpha I Cell Kit (500 mL jacketed glass cell)

SKU: [PROT-A2J-500] Category: Tags: ,

The Proteus Alpha I Cell with 500 mL jacketed-cell, sometimes called a flat cell, is a commonly used tool for studying corrosion of flat metal samples, often which are modified with paint or other types of coatings. The Proteus Alpha I cell is especially suited to thin and planar samples without the need for expensive sample holders or custom electrodes. The Proteus Alpha I was designed to be simple to use, quick to assemble/disassemble/clean, sturdy, flexible, and versatile.  For photoelectrochemical applications, install a quartz window in one (or both) of the end plates instead. For many applications, the Proteus Alpha I Cell from Pine Research can simplify the physical setup of both corrosion and photoelectrochemical experiments.  Customers often choose our Proteus Alpha I Cell for the following primary reasons:

  • many flexible components to vary volume, temperature, sample size, and application are possible with this cell
  • pivoting feet holds the sample against O-rings, allowing slight curvature of the metal sample
  • easily replace flat metal samples with quartz windows for a flexible photoelectrochemical cell

Description

In Greek mythology, Proteus is a god of rivers and oceanic bodies of water, known for changing his shape.  From his name comes the adjective protean, which connotes something that is “versatile” and “capable of assuming many forms.”  Further, the adjective Protean is used to describe things that are flexible, versatile, and adaptable.  We could find no better name for this series of photoelectrochemical cells, which are able to assume many forms to suit the needs of the researcher.

Proteus Alpha I cell design employs two rigid end assemblies on either side of a ~500 mL glass cell. This cell features an advanced design and includes several improvements over traditional flat cell designs:

  • Large bore opening (5.08 cm / 2″ OD) provides a greater electrode surface area. Custom bore adapters can be designed upon request if a user wants to work with a smaller surface area.
  • Three radial seal clamps, instead of only one. The radial arrangement reduces mechanical stress on the sample thereby minimizing stress corrosion at the point of clamp-to-sample contact. The radial arrangement also improves the seal between sample and end assembly.
  • Flexibility in sample size. The Proteus Alpha II Cell use samples that vary from thin to thick (up to 1″) with ease. There is no limitation on the lateral dimensions of the sample as long as it is larger than the exposed area defined by the O-Ring.
  • Seal clamps with pivoting feet. The seal clamps terminate with pads that can pivot in any direction. Such pads accommodate samples with some degree of curvature in addition to flat samples.
  • Glass cell for a variety of conditions. Suitable for both aqueous (water) and non-aqueous (organic solvents) electrolytes. A great deal of corrosion research is performed in aqueous solutions; however, the glass cell can be used with other solvent systems without risk of damaging the cell.
  • Low resistance electrode connection made possible by a unique electrode connection assembly.
  • On demand change of one metal sample without having to drain cell possible by holding the cell in a vertical geometry while changing out samples.
  • Common 14/20 joints across all parts of the cell for ease in making gas tight seals and connections around probes.
  • Versatile design can accommodate a cell to fit your specific needs.
  • Two-in-one cell system. Simply replace flat metal samples with quartz windows to convert the corrosion flat cell into a photoelectrochemical cell.  The protean nature of this cell lends itself to use in multiple chemical applications.
