Double Junction Mercury Sulfate Reference Electrode

SKU: RREF0026 Category: Tag:

SPECIAL SHIPPING DETAILS: Please note that reference electrodes always ship separately.  Special shipping arrangements may be required to process your order if you purchase a reference electrode.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS: Additional fees may be applied to cover the costs of shipping the double junction mercury sulfate reference electrode.  This electrode also may not be available for sale in all countries.

The standard double junction mercury sulfate (Hg/Hg2SO4) reference electrode contains two filling solutions: both inner and outer compartments are filled with saturated K2SO4 solution.  Only the outer fill solution comes in contact with electrolyte via the ceramic frit at the bottom, allowing an extra layer of protection between your electrolyte and the inner fill solution.  This can help prevent trace Hg2SO4 in the inner fill solution from diffusing into the bulk electrolyte.  The outer fill solution may also be drained manually and refilled with a different aqueous solution of the user’s choice, if there is a need to avoid either K+ or SO42- ions.

See “Description” tab below for additional precautions and information.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS: Additional fees may be applied to cover the costs of shipping the double junction mercury sulfate reference electrode.  This electrode also may not be available for sale in all countries.

MERCURY DISCLOSURE: To function properly, this electrode necessarily contains a small amount of mercury.  The maximum amount of mercury in this electrode is 0.3 grams.  See SDS Forms tab for safety information.

Avoid using this reference electrode with the following: perchlorates and non-aqueous/organic solvents

The reference electrode fits through the standard 14/20 ground glass joints found on our standard electrochemical cells.  A PTFE sleeve (included) facilitates mounting the reference electrode in the joint.

The junction at the lower end of the reference electrode is a ceramic frit that should be kept wet at all times.  If frit dries out, soak overnight in distilled water.  More information about care, storage, and usage can be found in the product information sheet, which you can download from the Documentation tab.

A small vial containing saturated K2SO4 electrode filling solution is included with the double junction mercury sulfate reference electrode.
