Single Junction Mercury Sulfate Reference Electrode

SKU: RREF0025 Category: Tag:

SPECIAL SHIPPING DETAILS: Please note that reference electrodes always ship separately.  Special shipping arrangements may be required to process your order if you purchase a reference electrode.

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS: Additional fees may be applied to cover the costs of shipping the single junction mercury sulfate reference electrode.  This electrode also may not be available for sale in all countries.

The standard single junction mercury sulfate (Hg/Hg2SO4) reference electrode is filled with saturated K2SO4 solution.  The reference electrode fits through the standard 14/20 ground glass joints found on our standard electrochemical cells.  A PTFE sleeve (included) facilitates mounting the reference electrode in the joint.

See “Description” tab below for additional precautions and information.  Pine Research recommends using alternative reference electrodes.  This electrode, while free of chloride, is difficult to use and maintain relative to Ag/AgCl.  Consider use of Ag/AgCl with a salt bridge when trying to avoid chloride contamination in the cell.

MERCURY DISCLOSURE: To function properly, this electrode necessarily contains a small amount of mercury.  The maximum amount of mercury in this electrode is 0.3 grams.  See SDS Forms tab for safety information.

Avoid using this reference electrode with the following: chloride ion, perchlorates, and non-aqueous/organic solvents

The junction at the lower end of the reference electrode is a ceramic frit that should be kept wet at all times.  If frit dries out, soak overnight in distilled water.  More information about care, storage, and usage can be found in the product information sheet, which you can download from the Documentation tab.

A small vial containing saturated K2SO4 electrode filling solution is included with the single junction mercury sulfate reference electrode.
